Chapter 16

Ren

Iran the number in front of me a third time. I hadn’t found anything the first two times and knew I wouldn’t find anything this time but it made me feel better to know I’d checked three times. I unplugged Kimber’s phone from my laptop, locked it, and set it face down. Then I pulled up the footage from the security cameras on our property, knowing Bear had already. There wasn’t much else I could do at this point. We kept Brix's truck on our property. Someone had gotten in and out without getting caught but we lived in the country. I couldn’t get footage from stoplight cameras.

I sighed and turned from my computer when Kimber and Bear came into the kitchen. Brix looked between them and chuckled. Bear hit him on the back of the head. It was painfully obvious they had gone off to fuck. Bear was livid. I hadn’t thought I would ever see him yell at Kimber. He had been vibrating with anger, but now smiling like the past few hours hadn’t happened.

It was crazy, the hold Kimber had on this man’s soul.

“I’ve got a meeting. Can someone keep eyes on Kimber?” Bear asked.

“A meeting?” Brix asked.

“Yeah.” Bear didn’t elaborate. “I shouldn’t be out too long, but I’ll let you guys know if it runs late.”

“And in the meantime what are we going to do about the threats to Kimber?”

“We get married tomorrow and if someone shows their face, we put them down,” Bear said. “As soon as we sign those marriage documents, we send copies to Orsen and have him put an ear out. In the meantime, nothing changes. Ren didn’t find anything from the number so there’s not much we can do. If they were stupid enough to reach out after Kimber blocked their number, maybe they’ll be stupid enough to show their faces.”

“Alright.” Brix reached in his pocket and pulled out his pack of cigarettes, instantly tapping one into his mouth. “Business as usual.”

Bear leaned down and kissed Kimber quickly. “I’ll be back in no time. If you need me, call me.”

She nodded and he flipped his hat onto his head before heading out the door.

I stared at the door after he’d left. A meeting. Bear didn’t usually have secrets. I didn’t like the feeling.

I pretended not to take it to heart though.

Brix and I sat at the table with Kimber and played cards, laughing and joking like shit hadn’t changed.

I was shocked when my sister reached out to Kimber and asked if she wanted to hang out. Even more shocked when Kimber agreed. She invited Kimber out to lunch with her and my mom. Brix and I tagged along because as much as I loved the women in my family, they weren’t equipped to deal with someone running up on Kimber. We got lunch at a place my mom swore by. Then we walked to some of the shops. Kimber got shoes and more of the little dresses she wore all the time.
